This documentary is designed to be a "wake the hell up" moment for most of America, who, in the opinion of the filmmakers, are in denial about the rising hunger problem in America. Like many documentaries, it covers the stories of a few to summarize the problems of many. The chosen people whose lives are examined in this video are as follows:
-Rosie, a fifth grader, and her family live in Colbran Colorado, and are one of the many residents of the town who rely on food stamps and the like
-Barbara Izquierdo lives as a single mother of two in N. Philadelphia
-Tremonica lives in Mississippi, a second grader whose afflictions, like obesity and asthma, are caused by the food desert in which she lives
A Place at the Table's main points cover food deserts (where they exist, why they happen, and how it affects the people who live in the area), The history of fighting hunger in america (When the fight really started, the vast improvements that were made, how things started getting worse, and the spike in hunger in America due to the gutting of social programs), price changes of foods in america (processed food is becoming much cheaper and much more accessible than fruits and vegetables. It's not that people don't want to eat their broccoli, it's just that it's too expensive
